Twitch Polls Without Affiliate · Updated June 2026

How to run a Twitch poll without being an affiliate

The short answer

No. Twitch's native poll is restricted to monetized streamers (Affiliates and Partners). But you can still run a real, on-stream poll on any channel with a free chat-command tool: viewers vote by typing !1, !2 or !3 in your normal chat, and the live results show on your OBS or Streamlabs overlay. No affiliate status and no Channel Points required.

Why native Twitch polls need affiliate status

Polls are one of Twitch's monetization features. Twitch's developer documentation states plainly that “running polls is available to partners and affiliates only,” and the Help Center says the feature is “exclusive to monetized streamers.” A non-monetized channel that tries to open one simply has no poll button. On top of the gate, the native poll is limited:

Three ways to poll without affiliate, compared

Most guides point non-affiliates at Nightbot or StrawPoll. The catch is that both send your viewers to an external page and show nothing on your stream. Here is the honest comparison.

The Nightbot route looks free and easy, but its !poll command just posts a StrawPoll link in chat. Viewers click out to vote on another website, and your stream shows nothing. That is the gap a chat-command poll with a live overlay closes.

The free alternative: a chat-command poll

A chat-command poll does not use Twitch's native feature at all, so the affiliate requirement never applies. The tool reads votes straight from your chat. It works from your first stream, and it removes the native limits at the same time.

No affiliate gate

Works on any Twitch channel, regardless of follower count or monetization status.

Vote by typing

Viewers type !1 to !8 in chat. No Channel Points, no clicking, nothing to install.

Live overlay

Results fill a bar chart on your stream overlay (OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit) so chat sees the vote happen.

Sub-only and weighting

Limit voting to subs and give them a vote weight, neither of which the native poll offers.

Make it your own

See it live on your overlay

Votes show up as a bar chart on your stream overlay, styled to match your channel through our Overlay Studio. Works in OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit, and Twitch Studio. Here is the same overlay cycling through a few looks.

How to run a poll without affiliate, step by step

Setup takes about a minute. No bot, no install, no affiliate.

  1. 1

    Log in with Twitch

Open StreamerGiveaway and log in with Twitch. It connects to your channel chat through Twitch OAuth. No password is shared and no bot is added to your channel.

  2. 2

    Write your question and options

Go to the Polls page, type your question, and add up to 8 options. Each option is assigned a chat command automatically: !1, !2, !3 and so on.

  3. 3

    Choose your voting rules

Decide whether voting is open to everyone or subscriber-only, whether viewers can change their vote, and whether to set a timer or end the poll manually.

  4. 4

Add the overlay to your stream software (optional)

Copy the poll overlay URL and add it as a Browser Source in OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit, or any broadcasting software so the live bar chart appears on stream.

  5. 5

Start the poll and tell chat to vote

Click Start Poll and tell chat to type !1, !2 or !3. Votes tally live and the leading option is highlighted until the poll closes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a poll on Twitch without being an affiliate?

Not with the native Twitch poll, which is limited to Affiliates and Partners. But you can run a poll on any channel with a chat-command tool like StreamerGiveaway: viewers type !1, !2 or !3 to vote and the results show on your overlay. No affiliate status is required.

Why are polls locked on my channel?

Twitch's poll feature is part of its monetization tools, so the poll button only appears once your channel reaches Affiliate or Partner. If you do not see it, your channel is not monetized yet. A chat-command poll has no such gate and works from your first stream.

How do viewers vote without Channel Points?

With a chat-command poll, viewers just type the command for their pick, such as !1. There are no Channel Points involved. In a native Twitch poll every viewer gets one free vote, and the streamer can optionally let viewers spend Channel Points for extra votes (Bits voting was removed in 2023).

Is it different from using Nightbot or StrawPoll?

Yes. Nightbot's poll command and StrawPoll both send your viewers to an external StrawPoll page to vote, and nothing shows on your stream. StreamerGiveaway keeps the vote in your chat and shows a live bar chart on your overlay, so the poll happens on stream.

Do my viewers need to install anything to vote?

No. Voting happens entirely in your normal Twitch chat. There is no extension, no app, and no separate poll website for your viewers to visit. They just type a command.

Can a moderator run the poll for me?

Yes. You can hand a poll to a trusted moderator with a private link so they can set it up and start it from their own screen, without access to your account, login, or billing.

What happens when I become an affiliate later?

You can keep using a chat-command poll even after you reach Affiliate. Many streamers prefer it because it allows up to 8 options, voting with no Channel Points cost, subscriber-only voting, and a vote weight for subs, none of which the native poll offers.

Is it really free?

Yes, it is free to start. Log in with Twitch, create a poll, and add the overlay to your stream at no cost. You do not need a credit card to run your first polls.
